The cheapest tree work there is, and why nobody buys it

A fifteen-year-old subdivision maple with two competing leaders is a ten-minute job to correct. Take the weaker leader back, let the stronger one take over, done, $150 to $350 including the visit. Do nothing and in twenty-five years you have two forty-foot stems pressing against each other over the driveway with a seam of trapped bark between them, and the options are a $600 cable, a $1,500 reduction or a $2,000 removal.

The reason nobody buys it is that nothing is wrong yet. There is no dead limb, nothing on the roof, no reason to pick up the phone. So we say it here instead: if your Walker subdivision was built in the last thirty years and the trees came with the house, get somebody to look at them once, before they are big enough to be expensive.

Standale and the older side

Different job entirely. Mature oak, maple and some genuinely large white pine, on lots that mostly take equipment easily. The regular work is deadwood on a three to five year cycle, clearance off roofs, and removals when something has finally reached the end. Oaks come off the city calendar rather than the state one, meaning dormant season, and we will say no to an August oak prune here the same as anywhere else in this county.

The white pines are their own thing. They shed lower limbs naturally as they grow, hold snow load badly, and drop very large branches in wet snow with no wind at all. Deadwooding a big pine is unglamorous work that pays for itself the first February.

Millennium Park ground, and what old fill does to trees

The Millennium Park area west of the city is reclaimed gravel pit and industrial ground, and the properties around that whole corridor sit on soil that has been moved, compacted and in places filled. Trees on made ground behave differently: shallower root systems, poorer drought tolerance, and a much higher rate of root flares buried under fill. A buried flare is the commonest reason a twenty-year-old tree quietly declines and everybody blames the weather. Root collar excavation is a $250 to $600 job and it occasionally saves a tree that three other people had written off.
