Windthrow, which is a different problem from branch failure

A tree on well-drained ground fails by dropping limbs. A tree on saturated ground fails by going over whole, root plate and all, because the soil lets go before the wood does. That is windthrow and it is what the low ground along Buck Creek and the Grand River flats produces in a serious wind event. Pruning does very little about it. What helps is reducing sail area on the windward side and knowing which trees on your lot are candidates before the storm rather than after.

The tell is the ground rather than the tree. Walk out ten or twelve feet from the trunk after a big blow and look for a crack in the turf, a low ridge of heaved soil on one side, or a gap opening where the trunk enters the ground. Any of those means the root plate has moved, and once it has moved the tree does not put itself back. That is a removal conversation, and it is urgent in a way that a dead branch is not.
