Windbreak rows, thirty to sixty years on

A windbreak is a row of trees planted close together to slow wind across a field, usually spruce, pine, poplar or a mix, and usually planted much tighter than any of those species would choose. It works well for a few decades. Then the row starts to die out from the inside, the survivors are tall and one-sided because they only ever grew toward the light on the open side, and the whole thing becomes a line of leaning trees along somebody's back fence.

There is no fixing a failed row. There is taking it out and replanting properly, or taking it out and leaving it out. What makes it manageable is that it is far cheaper per tree done as a run than as individual removals, typically $450 to $1,100 a tree rather than $1,000 and up, because it is one mobilisation, one chipper setup and a straight line to work along. If your neighbours share the row, and they usually do, doing it together halves everybody's cost.

Muck and lowland ground west of town

Parts of this area sit on the drained lowland soils that made it good growing country: high organic content, high water table, very little structural strength. Trees on that ground grow fast, root shallow, and go over in wind, which is the same windthrow story as Grandville but from a different cause. It also means machinery access is seasonal in a way it is not on higher ground: we can work sites in February and August that are genuinely untouchable in April.

Practical consequence for you: if you are not in a hurry, book lowland work for frozen ground. It is cleaner, faster and cheaper, and you will not spend the spring reseeding ruts.

Ottawa County, and who to ask

Hudsonville is a city, unlike Jenison, and it is in Ottawa County rather than Kent. Trees inside your property lines are yours. Trees in the road right-of-way go through the city, or on some roads through the Ottawa County Road Commission, and it is worth establishing which before anybody quotes. None of the City of Grand Rapids guidance applies here, though the Michigan DNR oak wilt window applies statewide and we work to it.
