Grinding is not the same as removal. We are not digging the root system out, we are chewing the stump and the buttress roots down below grade with a carbide wheel and turning them into chips. For lawn, patio base or replanting nearby, that is enough. For a foundation, a pool excavation or a new footing, it is not, and you want full extraction, which is an excavator job and a different price.

How deep, and why the number matters

Six to eight inches below grade is standard and covers re-seeding grass. Ten to twelve inches is what you want if you are laying sod, putting a patio over it, or planting a new tree anywhere near the same spot. Beyond about eighteen inches you are into the taproot and the price climbs steeply for very little practical gain.

Ask any grinding quote what depth it includes. It is the single most common place a cheap quote is cheap: four inches gets the visible stump gone and leaves you with a root plate two inches under your new sod that surfaces the first dry summer.

What comes out of the hole, and what goes back in

One stump produces a surprising amount of material, roughly two to three times the volume of the stump itself because the chips fluff. Default is that we rake the grindings back into the hole, crown it slightly because it will settle, and take the surplus. If you are re-seeding straight away, tell us and we will haul the lot and you can bring in topsoil, because grindings are high-carbon and grass sulks in them for a season.

Underground is the part that actually causes problems. Every grind gets a utility locate first, and the ones that catch people out in Grand Rapids are irrigation lines, invisible dog fence, low-voltage landscape lighting and old clay downspout runs, none of which show up on a locate. If you know where yours are, mark them. Fridays are our maintenance day and the grinder gets its teeth swapped, so we do not book stump work then.
