This site describes municipal and township tree rules for Grand Rapids and surrounding communities because almost nobody else does, and because knowing them saves people money. Those rules change, some of what we describe is in draft rather than in force, and the summaries here are our reading rather than a legal opinion. Confirm anything that matters with the relevant city or township before you act on it. Where a page describes a proposal we say so on the page.

Pricing

All prices on this site are ranges compiled in August 2026 from local quote data and published cost guides for the Grand Rapids area, and they move with fuel, disposal and labour costs. They are published so you can sanity-check a quote, not so you can hold anyone to a number. The only figure that means anything is the one on a written quote after somebody has walked the tree.

Tree work is dangerous

Several pages here explain how to identify defects in your own trees. That is intended to help you decide when to call somebody, not to help you do the work. Do not climb, do not use a chainsaw at height, and do not go near anything under tension or near a power line.
